New Version of Pixelated Plus

Pixelated Plus, currently the 6th most popular app for the BlackBerry PlayBook has now been updated to version 2.6. This update fixes the bugs found in the first PlayBook version, and now automatically saves any in-progress games for both the tablet and smartphone versions of the app.

New in version 2.6

In addition to the bug fixes on the PlayBook version, much of the user interface was also reworked making fonts easier to read, and adding direct links to take you to the website, and to email support for the app. The main change for the smartphone version of the app is that persistence of games from one session to another. You can now exit the application (or even restart your phone) and not lose any progress in your current game.

About Pixelated Plus

Pixelated Plus is an addicting puzzle based strategy game that requires a mixture of skill and luck in order to accomplish. The object of the game is to change the colour of the squares until the entire screen is a single solid colour. Starting with the square in the upper left corner you can change the colour of the blocks in order to match that of the surrounding squares. This is done repeatedly until the entire screen is a single colour. The object of the game is to clear the screen in as few moves as possible. Under the default settings you must do so in under 22 moves in order to win.

Trackpad support has been expanded so that you can also flick up and down in order to scroll through the colour options as well as left and right. Also the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is now supported, although there are a few issues that will be fixed soon, so it is actually recommended that you wait until version 2.6 is out before adding this game to your PlayBook. If all goes according to plan, version 2.6 of Pixelated will be out this time next week.

Pixelated Plus on the PlayBook does not save your data

I just wrote yesterday about the problems some applications will have on the PlayBook at launch due to a complete lack of testing. Just a few hours ago RIM finally updated the simulator, and it reveals that under normal situations your game data in my application will not be saved.

As such Black Out will be pulled from AppWorld until it can be updated to version 1.1 and tested on an actual device. Pixelated Plus and the free version of Pixelated will remain for sale in order to not disrupt the many customers using the application on their phones. The free version of Pixelated has not yet been approved in AppWorld, but probably will be later this week.

An update to these applications is (obviously) going to be a top priority and will be released as soon as possible. Until then, however, THE ONLY WAY TO ENSURE THAT YOUR PROGRESS IN THE GAME IS SAVED IS TO OPEN UP THE GAME OPTIONS AND CHANGE THE COLOUR SCHEME. So at least there is a workaround (as bizarre as it may be).

The disappointing thing is that this issue could have been avoided completely had RIM just send out devices to developers a week ago. Although the issue has not yet had time to be fully investigated, a few days notice probably would be enough to have this fixed by the launch of the device. Instead Research in Motion is sending out units to developers a week late, which is just going to delay everyone getting their applications updated even more.

Version 2.5 of Pixelated Plus released

Pixelated Plus has now been updated to version 2.5 and is available for download through BlackBerry AppWorld.

As previously announced, this new version of Pixelated Plus adds support for the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. Additionally improvements were made to navigating the application on trackpad devices, as well as some other minor improvements and bug fixes.

Improved trackpad navigation

For users navigating Pixelated Plus with a trackpad or trackball rather then a touchscreen, version 2.5 adds a number of navigation improvements. First you can now scroll up and down on the trackpad to move the colour selector in the game. While at first this may not seems as intuitive as scrolling left and right, many users feel scrolling up and down is a more natural motion. Additionally after a game is over you can now use keyboard shortcuts to decide between replaying the same game or starting a new game.

BlackBerry PlayBook

In Version 2.5 of Pixelated Plus support has also been added for RIM’s upcoming tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Customers who have already bought Pixelated Plus on their BlackBerry will be able to download the application to their PlayBooks without having to repurchase the game.

Pixelated Plus for BlackBerry PlayBook

First announced in December, Pixelated Plus will be released for the BlackBerry PlayBook when the tablet launches in the next few weeks. The application includes all of the features currently found in the smartphone version Pixelated Plus, and adds the additional option of a super-micro grid size along with three new achievements to go along with it.

Converting Pixelated Plus from a BlackBerry Java application to a PlayBook ActionScript application took 14 hours and 37 minutes.

Pixelated on the PlayBook

The things that make Pixelated a great game is that, each round is quick to play, the game doesn’t require a high resolution screen, and that it has a very small file size. None of these advantage really make that much sense on a tablet, where you can’t quickly pull the device out of your pocket, the screen has all the resolution you will even need, and plenty of space to store your files. Regardless, there will be a version of Pixelated on the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Pixelated now has over 2,000 reviews

Pixelated, the most popular strategy game in BlackBerry AppWorld, now has over 2,000 reviews.

It has done so a less than half a year since reaching 1,000 reviews, back in June. In all of these reviews, Pixelated has maintained its solid 4 out of 5 star rating, and has spent plenty of time in the top 25, and recently even reached as high as number three.

Thank you again to everyone, for your support of Pixelated over the past year and a half.

OS5.0 upgrade rates

With the recent release of BlackBerry OS6, the upgrade rate to OS5 continues to be a bit slow. But despite all the complaints about Verizon being slow to roll out an update for the Tour, popular Verizon phones like the 9530 and the 9630 have some of the best upgrade rates. The upgrade rate on the Storm has not improved that much over the past few months. Full data below.

Application Support for the BlackBerry Torch

Twinkle on the BlackBerry TorchYesterday RIM announced the launch of the BlackBerry Torch 9800. It has a new operating system and input mechanism, making application support for it a mixed bag.

First of all Twinkle can support already support the Torch, and will be good to go on day one.

Pixelated and Pixelated Plus will support the BlackBerry Torch starting with version 2.3 which should be available before the Torch goes on sale next week. More on version 2.3 of Pixelated in the coming days…

The Hockey Scores application can support the Torch, but is due for an update to version 2.0 before the start of the 2010-2011 hockey season. As such there is no reason to make this application available for the 9800 immediately. Expect version 2.0 of Hockey Scores to be released in early October.

10,000 Farkle is the one application that is a bit buggy on the BlackBerry Torch. As such Farkle support on the 9800 will be held off until the application can be updated to version 1.2.
