This data was collected by BlackBerry World at the time of download, for the popular PlayBook strategy game Pixelated. Data shown on the chart is from the beginning of February 2012 through the end of February 2013.
The above chart shows the county break down of downloads of Xploding Boxes on Windows 8 over the past 6 months. This data is collected by Microsoft’s store. The below chart shows the country breakdown for Pixelated over the same time period. For both games there were more users from the United States than any other country. Followed by (in both cases) the United Kingdom, and Canada.
February saw the launch of BlackBerry 10 in most countries (besides the United States), so I figured that it would be worth taking a look at which countries BlackBerry 10 users are in.
Canada (unsurprisingly) lead the way with 62% of BlackBerry 10 users. It was followed by the United Kingdom with 17% of users, and then a collection of middle eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar. Surprisingly the United States managed to have a bit of a showing despite not yet being formally launched in that country.
This data for this chart was taken from downloads of the free BlackBerry strategy game Pixelated over the course of February 2013, and excludes Dev Alpha devices.
For the second straight month, the distribution of BlackBerry OS versions are mostly unchanged. Almost all users (98.5%) are running OS 5.0 or higher, but only about a third of users (34.1%) are on the newest version of the OS.

PlayBook users have always been quick to upgrade to the newest OS version, and January saw that pattern continue. While most users were already on OS 2.1.0 going into the month, January saw 98.1% of users on the most recent OS version.

While last week saw the launch of BlackBerry 10, the majority of BlackBerry users are still on the classic BlackBerry operating system. The distribution of operating system versions is almost completely unchanged from where it was in December. With users of higher end devices more likely to able to afford to upgrade to BlackBerry 10 there is even the possibility that the percentage of users on OS 6 and 7 may actually even go down in the coming months.

The PlayBook is seeing a much more diverse installation base then when I looked at it last year. While the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom combine for 71.6% of users, another six countries held claim to over one percent of the instal base, and downloads were seen from 142 different nations.
The PlayBook continues to have an outsized popularity in RIM’s homeland of Canada, accounting for 37.8% of users. The PlayBook also showed surprising popularity in India and the Philippines, which both saw a higher share of PlayBook users than traditional BlackBerry hubs such as Indonesia.
The vast majority (83.93%) of these users have English as their primary language. The next most popular languages were Spanish, French and German.
96.5% of PlayBook users are running OS 2.1.0, and well over 99% of users are running some version OS 2.x on their devices. For more details see yesterday’s post on BerryReview.

December continued the recent trend of growth of the marketshare of OS 7. The most recent BlackBerry OS is now being used by 34.1% of users, while the percentage of users on OS 6 (or higher) climbed only slightly to 60.1%.

As seen with previous OS versions on the PlayBook, users have been very quick to adopt OS 2.1 when it was released last month. October saw 73.3% of PlayBook users running the new OS. Most of those running early versions were from the first week of the month, when OS 2.1 was not yet released.

October saw the use of BlackBerry OS 7 increase to 26.5% of users. This was the largest single month gain in the past year, but follows two months of very little change. The increase came mostly at the expense of OS 5.0 users, as the other OS versions remained mostly steady.
The majority of remaining OS 4.x devices are Curve 8520 devices running OS 4.6.1 in the UK. In fact, an astounding 58.1% of all OS 4.x devices are in the United Kingdom.

With version 2.1.0 not released until early in October, September saw very little change in the OS breakdown on the PlayBook, as the vast majority of users were already running the latest version. As with last month 99.6% of users were running OS 2.0.0 or higher, and 98.6% of users were running 2.0.1 or higher.

While I often do my best to post statistics of my apps here, RIM recently released a lot of data at BlackBerry Jam. In a presentation by Peter Valin AppWorld stats are broken out by region and OS version. Highlights include the fact that carrier billing accounts for 75% of revenue, and that there are 2,000+ apps with BBM integration.
