Use of BlackBerry OS 4.x falls below 1%

While I stopped actively working on apps for OS 4.x two years ago, it wasn’t until this past month that use of the now ancient OS finally fell below 1%. In my very first post on BlackBerry OS statistics from back in 2009, I expressed my surprise that 49% of users will still on the 4.6 operating system. After a few years of charting these statistics I am no longer surprised my the slow upgrade cycle on BBOS, but it is nice to see this older OS disappear for good.

However, the rest of the chart is mainly unchanged from the previous month.

Use of OS 10.2 increases only slightly in December

While BlackBerry 10 had previously been seeing very aggressive upgrade rates, December saw only a modest uptick in those using the latest OS version. This is most likely due to some wireless carriers (like Verizon) continuing to block this update from their users.

With 76.9% of Stuff I Need users running OS 10.2, users of the checklist app have once again been a bit quicker to adopt the newer OS than the users of Pixelated have been. For Pixelated use of the newest OS was up to 61.2% which is less than a two percent increase from November.

For December statistics on the distribution of BlackBerry 10 devices, see yesterday’s post on BerryReview. The short version is that the BlackBerry Z10 currently accounts for 62.2% of the market.

Gender of Windows 8 gamers

I am not quite sure how Microsoft goes about collecting this information (and it is clearly incomplete), but for Windows 8 apps developers are provided with the breakdown of who downloaded their apps. The two charts below show the gender distribution for the two most popular Ebscer games on the Windows 8 store. As you can see, the two games show very different results.

Improving app efficiency

It can be rather impressive to see how much the efficiency of your code can improve as you get to know a platform better. When it comes to writing BlackBerry 10 apps in Cascades my code has gotten dramatically better. This is not the result of any special magic, but instead a by product of putting in the required hours for a given platform. For example my Mileage Tracker app has recently been updated to version 1.5 and despite continuing to add new features in each new version, the size of the .bar file is as small as it has ever been. To look at the overall sizes of the .bar file for the Mileage Tracker app see the below chart.

Majority of BlackBerry 10 users on newest OS

November saw a majority of BlackBerry 10 users move to OS 10.2, the newest version of the operating system. However, due to a slow roll out by some carriers (such as Verizon) there still remains a sizable number of users on the older 10.1 version.

2013Nov-Pixelated-BB10OSVersions

2013Nov-StuffINeed-BB10OSVersions

59.3% of users who downloaded Pixelated in November were running the newest OS, while this was true for 67.9% of users who downloaded the Stuff I Need app. Meanwhile there are still about five percent of BlackBerry 10 users on the original 10.0 release that the Z10 first launched with.

Only 1 in 4 BlackBerry 10 phones have a physical keyboard

I have been pointing this out for awhile now, but the majority of BlackBerry 10 phones sold have no physical keyboard at all. Given BlackBerry’s history this is surprising to some, but has been rather consistent for at least half a year now. Devices with keyboards peaked at 28.76% in August, but since then most of the market’s growth has come from the touch-screen only Z30.

Classic BlackBerry OS distribution mostly unchanged

November saw very little change in the distribution of OS versions on classic BlackBerry phones.

StatsNovember2013

November saw 46.6% of users running OS 7, with the rest of the user base split rather evenly between OS 5 and 6.

Adoption of 10.2 starts off slow

Despite the rapid adoption seen earlier this year of OS 10.1 the adoption of OS 10.2 has gotten off to a bit of a slower start. Statistics are shown from the entire month of October, so it does include a few days before the upgrade was officially released, but a decent percentage of users had already downloaded leaked versions of the OS the month before. Downloads of Pixelated showed 16.2% of users running OS 10.2 in October, while downloads of Stuff I Need showed 28.2% of users on 10.2 during the same month.

BlackBerry 10 users still prefer the virtual keyboard

With the recently launched Z30, BlackBerry has produced its second BB10 phone without a physical keyboard. So far the new devices still composes only a modest 4.4% of the overall BB10 market, but it contributes to a months long pattern of users choosing a bigger screen over a physical keyboard.

BB10DevicesOct2013-StuffINeed

The Z-series devices combine for 72.9% of the overall market, with more than two non-keyboard devices being used for each one that has a full qwerty layout. BlackBerry’s keyboard may still be iconic, but it is no longer an accurate representation of how the majority of BlackBerry users view their phones.

Classic BBOS devices continue to slowly get upgraded

BlackBerry is no longer actively working on their classic BBOS platform, with the newest OS 7 now being over two years old. However, the percentage of users on BBOS continues to drift towards the newer versions of the OS.

StatsOct2013

As of October 73.0% of users are on OS 6+ and 45.2% of users are on OS 7+. Both of these rates are up roughly two percentage points from September.

Canadian BB10 Carriers

For those who are wondering why Roger’s decision to sell the BlackBerry Z30 last week is such a big deal, simply look at the chart below that shows the distribution of BlackBerry 10 users on the three largest carriers in Canada over the past seven months.

CanadianCarriers

Every month Rogers has almost as many BlackBerry 10 users on their network as Bell and Telus do combined. Even with limited promotion it is entirely possible that Rogers will end up selling more Z30 BlackBerrys than any other wireless carrier.

Use of OS 10.1 grows another 5%

September continued to see growth in the number of users running OS 10.1 (or higher) on their BlackBerrys. While Stuff I Need users continue to be quicker to adopt new versions than Pixelated users, both saw an increase of about five percentage points over the previous month.

Over 43% of BBOS devices are running OS 7

BlackBerry’s traditional OS saw another month of slow growth towards newer versions of the operating system. The month of September resulted in 43.2% of users running OS 7, and 71.1% of users on OS 6 or higher.

Popularity of US carriers for BB10 users

The below chart shows the relative popularity of the four largest carriers in the United States by BlackBerry 10 users.

BB10USCarriersAug2013

While there has been some month to month variation in general there is roughly an equal number of BlackBerry 10 users on AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The biggest surprise here is the relative popularity of T-Mobile among the BlackBerry 10 user base as it lags significantly behind the other two in overall subscribers.

BBOS devices continue to see slow growth of new OS versions

StatsAugust2013

While BBOS has nowhere near the impressive OS adoption that BlackBerry 10 has shown, users are continuing to move towards a larger percentage running OS 7. August showed the newest version of BBOS exceeding 40% of the market for the first time, coming to 40.8% of users during the month.
